What is the best material for furniture fronts?

References

Designing built-in furniture is the art of combining aesthetics with utilitarian values. Fronts are the showcase of every piece of furniture and the element that first catches the eye and defines the character of the entire interior. Choosing the right material for kitchen units, bathroom cabinets, or a representative island is a decision that will affect both the final design of the space and the comfort of its everyday use. In today's article, we will present which materials from the Architype range will work best as furniture fronts.

Resistance to a demanding environment

Kitchen or bathroom units are zones where furniture must cope with very specific challenges. When choosing a material for fronts, you should primarily assess its resistance to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and constant contact with water and steam. The hardness of the surface is equally important - resistance to scratches, impacts, or abrasion is of key importance in heavily used homes. We must also not forget about the ergonomics of everyday life. It is worth analysing whether a given material tends to absorb stains, how it reacts to cleaning agents, and whether fingerprints and other possible impurities are visible on it.

Material weight and the durability of furniture fittings

Apart from the parameters of the surface itself, we cannot ignore the laws of physics. A furniture front constitutes a weight for the cabinet body, and all loads associated with opening and closing are taken on by the fittings - hinges, flap stays, or drawer runners. The weight of the chosen material therefore directly determines the lifespan of these mechanisms. Materials of higher density (such as a thicker slab of natural stone, e.g. granite) require reinforced fittings and, in some cases, special structural supports.

Puricelli HPL slabs as furniture fronts

If we are looking for a material that combines a relatively low weight with high resistance to damage, HPL panels from the Italian brand Puricelli will be one of the most reasonable choices. These are high-pressure thermosetting laminates that cope perfectly with difficult conditions in the kitchen and bathroom. This material is characterised by very low water absorption in accordance with the EN 438 standard, which means that these panels do not absorb moisture and are resistant to steam. Puricelli panels are available in several sheet formats and thicknesses, with 12 mm recommended for fronts (the exact format and thickness availability for each decor can be checked in our catalogue). They have a compact structure without microcracks and pores, which means that impurities do not penetrate deep into the material. Thanks to this, daily cleaning is quick and hassle-free.

In the case of modern built-in furniture opened by touch (push-to-open systems), we often struggle with unsightly marks on the fronts. This is where the MOREMATT technology comes to the rescue, which is a matt surface created using nanotechnology. It is resistant to the formation of fingerprints, and any micro-scratches can be removed from it with an ordinary melamine sponge. In turn, in places where we particularly care about hygiene, the integrated A.BAC antibacterial coating will work perfectly. It reduces the presence of bacteria by 99.9 percent and maintains its properties throughout the entire period of using the furniture.

From the visual side, laminates give a huge scope to show off - the Puricelli range comprises a carefully selected palette of decors (the up-to-date assortment can be checked in our catalogue). Among them, we will find, among others, the MOREWOOD technology, which faithfully reproduces the structure of natural wood. It is also worth mentioning safety issues - Puricelli panels are produced on the basis of ecological resins without the use of phenol. They possess an emission class E1 according to the EN 717-1 standard. Standard panels are classified as D-s1,d0 according to the EN 13501-1 standard, with a fire-retardant version of class B-s1,d0 available on request, so they are a material safe for health and environmentally friendly.

KRAFFTEN slabs as furniture fronts

Another solution in the category of laminates are panels from the HPL KRAFFTEN, distinguished by a characteristic black core. It is a material of high density (approx. 1.35 g/cm³), which translates into a sheet weight of approximately 16–17 kg/m². These panels are offered in an optimal format of 4300 × 1830 × 12 mm, which allows for the effective planning of large surfaces without unnecessary joints.

Similarly to Puricelli, KRAFFTEN meets rigorous technical norms: it possesses an emission class E1 (according to EN 717-1). Standard panels are classified as D-s1,d0 according to the EN 13501-1 standard, with a fire-retardant version of class B-s1,d0 available on request, which makes the material suitable for use in interiors with elevated fire safety requirements. A non-porous structure guarantees low water absorption (according to EN 438), blocking the penetration of water and the development of microorganisms. The process of their production consists of soaking kraft paper with a special phenolic resin and pressing it under high pressure and at a high temperature. The use of this material on built-in furniture guarantees exceptional resistance to mechanical damage, impacts, and scratches. KRAFFTEN panels also show high thermal resistance, thanks to which they remain dimensionally stable within the operating temperature range specified by the producer.

In terms of aesthetics and design, the panels are available in a carefully selected palette of decors (it can be checked here), in two finishing variants. The first is the ST variant, a uniform semi-matt texture appearing on both sides of the sheet. The second variant is the DP/ST finish, which combines a deep stone texture on one side and a semi-matt finish on the other. This allows you to achieve many various compositional effects in the interior.

Decors and finishes for special tasks!

When planning built-in furniture exposed to intensive use, it is worth paying attention not only to the physical parameters, but also to the visual layer of the fronts itself. A suitable decor can effectively hide everyday signs of use, reducing the need to frequently wipe the surface. In such conditions, natural earth colours, light greys, creams, and beiges work best, on which settling dust is least visible. Any small patterns, irregular veining, and distinct textures are also a very good ally, because they optically distract attention and mask minor impurities. In turn, when it comes to the finish, matt surfaces remain the safest and most practical choice. Unlike high gloss, they do not expose marks left by fingers or dried water drops.

In our offer, as furniture fronts, we also recommend large ceramic slab, quartz surface, and acrylic solid surface. Regardless of the chosen variant, all these surfaces share several key utility parameters. They are highly durable and completely non-porous materials, which guarantees maintaining the highest standards of hygiene. The lack of micro-crevices means that water does not penetrate into their structure, and the panels themselves are stain-resistant and exceptionally easy in everyday cleaning.

It is worth emphasising that both HPL laminates of the Puricelli and KRAFFTEN brands, as well as the previously mentioned large ceramic slabs, quartz surfaces, or acrylic solid surfaces, are perfectly suitable for the comprehensive finishing of an entire kitchen or bathroom. This allows for the use of the same decor not only on the fronts but also on the countertops or wall claddings, which guarantees exceptional visual consistency and allows you to achieve a modern effect of a monolithic interior. Choosing the appropriate raw material from this group, however, always depends on the specific construction of the furniture itself and the load-bearing capacity of the opening systems. For this reason, it is worth consulting your project with our experts, who will help to precisely select the right material and slab thickness depending on the type of planned implementation.
