Natural stone care – how to clean, impregnate and protect its surface

References

Natural stone has been used in architecture and interiors for centuries - not without reason. It is durable, resistant and ages in a way that many other materials cannot. However, this does not mean that it does not require any attention. Marble, granite, travertine, quartzite and onyx differ in structure and behave differently in everyday use. Understanding the differences between them has a direct impact on how long the stone will retain its appearance and properties.

Granite is considered one of the most problem-free natural stones. It is hard, resistant to moisture and scratches, which is why it is often used for countertops, floors and commercial spaces. However, this does not mean that it does not need protection - impregnating granite reduces the absorption of dirt and only needs to be renewed every 2-3 years, depending on the intensity of use.

Marble is a more demanding material, but also exceptionally noble. Its surface is sensitive to acids, so contact with lemon juice, vinegar or aggressive chemicals can leave permanent marks. Regular impregnation and gentle cleaning are key here. In the case of marble, the surface protection should be renewed every 12-18 months to maintain the shine and natural pattern of the stone.

Travertine, due to its porous structure, requires similar attention. The pores can absorb moisture and dirt, so they are often filled before use and the surface itself is regularly impregnated - this means protecting the travertine every 12-18 months. When maintained regularly, the stone works well both indoors and in semi-open spaces, retaining its warm, natural appearance.

Quartzite is very mechanically and chemically resistant, but this does not make it completely insensitive to all factors. Especially in kitchens and bathrooms, it can be susceptible to oil stains. The use of a stain-resistant impregnating agent significantly reduces this problem and allows the surface to remain in good condition even with intensive use.

Onyx requires the most attention. It is a delicate stone, prone to scratches and sensitive to inappropriate cleaning agents. It is worth using it as a decorative element in places less exposed to damage. Onyx requires more frequent impregnation, the frequency of which depends directly on the method and intensity of use. Only regular protection allows you to preserve its structure and beautiful visual effect.

How to clean natural stone?

Daily cleaning of natural stone should not be complicated. All you need is a soft cloth or microfibre sponge and pH-neutral stone cleaning products (e.g. ILPA Adesivi Clean). It is essential to avoid acidic and strongly alkaline detergents, which gradually destroy the surface and weaken the impregnation layer. Spilled liquids and dirt are best removed immediately before they have time to penetrate the stone structure.

How to impregnate natural stone?

Impregnating natural stone provides invisible protection that reduces the absorption of water, grease and dirt, making the material easier to maintain and less susceptible to permanent stains. Impregnating agents should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, without shortening the application time or using excessive amounts of the product.

Daily habits also have a huge impact on the durability of stone. Using trivets for hot dishes, cutting on a board instead of directly on the countertop, avoiding impacts with sharp objects and sensible use significantly extend the life of the surface.

Well-maintained natural stone does not lose its properties over time. It ages gracefully, retaining the appearance that was the reason for its selection – the best proof of this are monuments, sculptures and temples that have survived for hundreds of years and continue to delight us today. Regular cleaning, proper impregnation and basic protection ensure that natural stone remains a durable and aesthetic element of the interior for years to come.
