From light oak to deep walnut. How to choose HPL panel decors with a wood texture?
References
Interior design is not only about selecting materials with appropriate technical parameters but, above all, the art of creating a specific atmosphere. For centuries, natural wood has been a synonym for warmth and elegance; however, in demanding commercial spaces or intensively used domestic zones, it often gives way to more technologically advanced solutions. Among the HPL panels from the Architype offered by the Puricelli and KRAFFTEN brands, there are decors that faithfully imitate wood in terms of appearance and texture. How to match them well to a given project?
Light decors inspired by wood
Light tones perfectly reflect natural and artificial light. The use of such decors on large surfaces, for example, wall claddings or extensive furniture fronts, makes the space seem optically larger, more open, and "breathing". It is a safe choice for rooms with limited access to daylight. These types of shades are ideal for the Biophilic Design concept and styles such as Japandi, Scandinavian, or modern minimalism. Since a light wood texture perfectly calms the interior, it is worth combining it with pure white, subtle light concrete, or delicate natural stone decors to maintain full harmony and visual purity.
Warm, saturated tones of decors imitating wood
Decors with a distinct, sunny, or honey colour act as a visual "warmer". Their main function is to break the rawness and coldness often faced by spacious commercial facilities, open-space offices, or modern, ascetic apartments. Warm tones are instinctively associated with safety, inviting you to rest. This makes them an ideal background for classic, timeless arrangements, the relaxed boho style, and any interior where we simply care about a homely, warm atmosphere. Honey-toned grain pairs beautifully with earth tones, warm beiges, and a deep matte black that breaks it splendidly.
Deep, dark decors with a natural wood texture
Dark, saturated species of wood absorb light, which makes them optically narrow the space. However, this should be treated not as a flaw, but as an interesting design challenge. Wood-inspired surfaces in such colours build distance, seriousness, a sense of stability, and unquestionable luxury. For this reason, claddings referring to dark walnut or smoked oak are eagerly chosen for representative office zones, conference rooms, boutique hotels, as well as elegant, masculine private interiors. They fit perfectly into the modern classic, glamour, and art deco styles, but they also work well as a strong contrast in the raw industrial trend. Dark colours love bold, decisive company, which is why they create spectacular duets with deep, matte black and grey.
Why is it worth choosing wood-effect HPL panels instead of natural wood?
Natural wood is a beautiful and noble raw material, but it brings a number of operational challenges. It is a hygroscopic material that constantly "works" in enclosed spaces. Reacting to seasonal changes in humidity and temperature (e.g. during the heating season), it releases or absorbs water, which over time can lead to its drying out, cracking, or irreversible deformation. HPL panels by KRAFFTEN and Puricelli completely eliminate this problem – their core, pressed under high pressure, guarantees dimensional stability for years. Another challenge with the natural raw material is its microporosity. Even the best-protected wood grains can absorb dirt over time, and spilled coffee or wine can permanently penetrate the structure of the countertop. In turn, the compact, non-porous surface of high-pressure laminates is fully stain-resistant and blocks the growth of microorganisms. Maintaining cleanliness does not require cyclical oiling, varnishing, or costly coating renovation here, which is of key importance in intensively used commercial facilities and more demanding domestic spaces. A "wooden" cladding in the shower? With Architype, it's not a problem! Additionally, designing with solid wood on extensive surfaces brings installation challenges. The high weight forces the use of reinforced substructures, and in office buildings or hotels, a natural board may not pass rigorous inspections due to fire safety norms. HPL panels solve this problem as well – they combine the prestigious look of wood with meeting appropriate norms (class D-s1,d0 or B-s1,d0 on request), ensuring safety, structural lightness, and decor repeatability in monolithic, large-format projects.
