5 kitchen decorating mistakes

References

Designing a kitchen is a task that requires careful consideration and work planning to create a space that will be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing for many years to come. It is a room exposed to many harmful factors, such as moisture, high temperatures or substances that may cause stains. The kitchen is also a space that is labour-intensive and usually not the cheapest to finish. It is therefore worth making every effort to ensure that the end result can be enjoyable for years to come in an intact state. However, when decorating a kitchen, mistakes can be made that can have a negative impact on comfort. Here are 5 of the most common ones!

  1. Incorrect layout of work zones
The kitchen should be divided into zones: storage, cooking/baking and washing. Failure to apply the work triangle principle can lead to a chaotic, awkward kitchen. To avoid this, the fridge, sink and cooker should be positioned in such a way that they form an optimal triangle and the distances between them are appropriate (between 120 and 270 cm). The countertops between the zones will provide the optimum amount of space to do all kinds of work.
  2. Inadequate lighting
An insufficient number of light sources or their poor positioning makes kitchen tasks uncomfortable. Well-designed lighting should include general lighting that evenly illuminates the entire kitchen and task lighting that is directed at the countertops. In addition, consider decorative lighting to add character to the space and coordinate with the rest of the décor.
  3. Insufficient storage space
Too few cupboards and shelves or their inefficient management leads to clutter and difficulty in keeping things tidy. It is worth investing in practical solutions such as full-extension drawers, organisers or corner cabinets with rotating shelves to maximise the space available.
  4. Not enough work area
A work area that is too narrow makes it difficult to prepare meals and makes the kitchen uncomfortable. A useful solution is to add a kitchen peninsula or island, which will increase the work area (and can also act as a convenient table). It's advisable considering a pull-out countertop or folding table too, which will provide extra space for working or spending time with loved ones.

  5. Choosing unsuitable materials for kitchen fittings
This can lead to rapid surface wear or time-consuming maintenance and even costly repairs and renovations. It is worth investing in materials that are durable and easy to clean, such as quartz surface, large ceramic slab or acrylic solid surface. Avoid materials that are easy to scratch, stain and those with poor resistance to moisture and heat.

The kitchen is considered by many to be the heart of the home. It is therefore worth paying a little more attention to it, so that the result of our efforts is a comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing interior that you want to be in.
